Why did Charles Dickens write the novel?
People will make extraordinary sacrifices for the things they love. Dickens was influenced by The Frozen Deep, which has a main character dying so his love can be happy with another man, and his novel shows it. He made a great work where his characters all sacrifice for the thing they desire most. The main antagonist Madame Defarge is in love with her dream of being a Revolutionary and she will sacrifice everyone and anything, including herself, to make that dream a reality. There is irony in Sydney's sacrifice because he was the character least likely to become a hero and yet he made the biggest sacrifice out of all the characters. The two main characters Charles and Sydney are important foils to each other. Even though Charles is the more respectable man of the two Sydney is the one that does the most for their shared love.
