Departure:
I chose Sam (Lord of the Rings) for my hero. His call to
adventure is a bit unique because he’s actually forced to start his with Frodo.
He doesn’t really want to but Gandalf doesn’t really give him a choice. There
first adventure is to get the Ring to the Elves stronghold and a long that path
Sam almost turns back because he’s never ventured father than the wheat field.
Frodo
After they get to the Elves Stronghold Frodo decides to take the Ring to
Mordor and knowing Frodo can’t go a lone Sam bravely volunteers to go with him.
Near the end of their journey Frodo tells Sam to leave him and go back home.
Discouraged Sam listens but knowing once again he has an obligation towards Frodo
and his promise to Gandalf he rushes back to save Frodo once again risking his life
when he could have easily walked away.
Initiation:
Sam makes few mistakes through his journey. He does however
show a lack of confidence through most of the story and there is a slight
hesitation in him to give the Ring back to Frodo. He also at one point starts
to trust Golem a little too much which eventually leads to Frodo’s capture. Sam
meets with the Elfish Queen in the Forbidden Forest where he is confronted with
emotions he was not ready for. At the end of their journey Frodo is not able to
throw away the Ring which destroys Sam on the inside as well. His whole purpose
was to protect Frodo and now he has let him stray into the most evil place of
all. As they realize they will die soon Sam starts to remember his old life and
the regret of never talking to the girl of his dreams. This is where his metamorphosis
finally ends and his new life begins.
Return:
Life returns to normal for the most part. Sam however has come
back with this new confidence and wisdom that few could even imagine possible. He
finally talks to the girl and they get married. His stories will slowly turn
into ancient myths that few people will believe true. But as everything seems
to fall into place his most valued friend that he risked his life for on
multiple occasions has to leave. This hurts him deeply but he knows Frodo has
to go. For his ultimate sacrifice Sam is blessed with a life of leisure and
peace but his wound will never heal.
