AP English Test Prep

Pre-write
·         Prompt is asking for lit techniques towards characterization and analyze them
·         Direct characterization of the old women, she is old and gross, “her thin, light, gray-streaked hair, as usual greasy and streaked with oil”
·         Indirect characterization of main character, “he suddenly began to imagine that old women was still alive..” he is nervous and very worrisome
·         Setting, wielding an ax and killing an old lady, describing the blood, the main character appears to be a villain, criminal
There are three main techniques used in this passage for characterization. The passage describes the old women in a very grotesque manner by using direct characterization. The use of an axe, visual imagery of blood, and the introduction of money at the end of the passage creates a setting for the male character. He appears to be a criminal.  The criminal also appears to be very nervous and worrisome with the use of indirect characterization.
